Battery White
A Must-See Stop on the Plantation Tour
Every year, the Diocesan Women of Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church sponsor a magnificent two-days of self-directed touring to numerous Georgetown County plantation sites, historic townhouses and other places. These sites reflect the indigo and rice plantation culture and lifestyle of Georgetown as it flourished from the early European plantations until the onset of the Civil War, due to the contribution of involuntary, unpaid labor provided by enslaved people. Battery White at Belle Isle is one of these tour sites each year. The artifacts in the mini-museum, the Tea Garden, and the reverence of the grounds of Battery White -- with the stories behind it and the sinking of the Union steamer "Harvest Moon" -- provide a suite of different experiences among all the wonderful sites on the tour.
Tickets for the Plantation Tour are often not available for purchase on the days of the tour. Tour dates vary each year but are usually in late March/early April. Details about the following year's dates and sites are posted beginning in November each year. Belle Isle is on the schedule for Friday or Saturday, alternating each year. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the tour was cancelled for 2020 and 2021, but you can visit Belle Isle at any time by calling ahead.
